Introducing Agentic AQUA

Your AI Agent's Wallet Has Arrived on Bitcoin and Liquid

In just a few years since the launch of the first commercial Large Language Model (LLM) chatbots like ChatGPT, AI tools have radically transformed how people live and work at an ever-increasing pace. They are no longer just chatbots. AI products are quickly becoming the go-to tool for writing code, conducting research, designing graphics, and handling countless other tasks. More recently, AI tools have undergone a new evolution. They are becoming agentic. With tools like OpenClaw, an AI agent framework that surpassed 210,000 GitHub stars in under four months, users can now unleash autonomous AI agents to navigate the internet and act on their own.

But while AI is reshaping a vast range of domains, one area where it still hits a wall is commerce. The problem is that the infrastructure for online payments we have today was built on the assumption that a human is on the other end of a transaction. CAPTCHAs gate checkouts. Payment processors analyze behavioral signals to verify a person is behind a session. So an AI agent trying to make a purchase looks, to every layer of that system, like something to be blocked.

Agents Need a Wallet

AI agents are going to need money they can actually use. Not a credit card tied to a human identity. Not a bank account gated by verification. They need internet-native money that software can hold and spend directly.

That is why Bitcoin is a natural fit. Bitcoin was never designed around a "human present" assumption. Any software process with a private key can send a transaction: no account, no identity check, no intermediary approval. The network validates the signature and settles the payment. Once confirmed, there is no chargeback path because no third party has the power to reverse it.

Meet Agentic AQUA

At A1 Lab, a division of JAN3, we saw that users wanted a way to bring the features they love about the popular AQUA Wallet, like fast, low-fee, confidential transactions on the Liquid Network, to their favorite AI agent. That's why we built Agentic AQUA. Agentic AQUA is an open source tool that gives your AI agent a real Bitcoin wallet. Connect it through MCP and your agent can generate addresses, check balances, send and receive Bitcoin on-chain, transact on the Liquid Network, and pay or create Lightning invoices, all through natural language. Or skip the agent entirely and drive the wallet yourself from the CLI.

How to Get Started

Just ask your AI agent directly:

"Install this MCP server: https://github.com/jan3dev/agentic-aqua"

Set up your wallet. From there you can create a new wallet or restore an existing one. To create, tell your agent "Create a new wallet" and it will generate a 12-word seed phrase. Write it down and store it offline. Whether you are creating a new wallet or restoring an existing one, we strongly recommend protecting it with a password (more on that below).

Keys stay on your device. Your seed phrase is stored and encrypted locally. Private keys are derived at the moment of signing a transaction and never saved. Setting a wallet password is critical: without one, the seed file is only base64-encoded and readable by anyone with access to your machine. With a password, it is encrypted and unreadable without it.

A note on amounts. Agentic AQUA is experimental, and it is a hot wallet. Private keys live on a connected device. It is not designed for storing significant funds. Agents make autonomous decisions, and an unchecked agent could spend your bitcoin in unexpected ways. Use it for small operational amounts.

That's it. From there, everything you already do in AQUA is available through natural language.

What Your Agent Can Do Today

A unified Bitcoin wallet. Your AQUA Wallet, through natural language. Simply talk to your agent instead of tapping your phone.

"Create a new wallet."
"What's my balance?"
"Send 10,000 Sats to this address."
"Pay this Lightning invoice."

Same wallet, same features. Send and receive Bitcoin and Liquid assets including Tether USDt and L-BTC, and pay over Lightning just by telling your agent what to do.

What's my L-BTC balance?
Called agentic-aqua 2 times (ctrl+o to expand)
Your default wallet has 11,982 Sats (0.00011982 L-BTC).
Send 10k Sats to Liquid address VJLE6aCH7bjbg9uogBWaH4hza5ryqnY5w163rKxHSBTRpHdmx7fAErvpeMFsGvNDSMJjgPeh1MvpEUhp
Before sending: you have 11,982 Sats and this will send 10,000 Sats, leaving ~1,982 Sats (minus fees). Confirm you want to proceed?
Yep!
Called agentic-aqua (ctrl+o to expand)
Sent. txid: 56bcfa0d7a7c58b07cb67c08c24ccd514dc3b9f96e32be8d1300a3cbc1178575

Recurring transactions. Because the agent controls the wallet directly, it can execute scheduled payments without any human involvement. Regular transfers, periodic invoices, automated savings contributions: all of it can run autonomously.

Invoicing. Tell your agent to send an invoice to a client and it will generate one with a Bitcoin or Liquid address for payment. No payment processor, no account setup required.

Hey, have we sent John this month's invoice yet?
No, not yet — I haven't sent John an invoice this month.
Send him an invoice for the amount he still owes us, payable in bitcoin.
Let me grab a Bitcoin address to include on the invoice.
Called agentic-aqua (ctrl+o to expand)
Done — invoice sent to John. I included the outstanding balance of $400 and attached your Bitcoin payment address:

Told him to use that address to settle up.

Shop with Bitrefill. Connect the Bitrefill MCP server (bitrefill.com/agents) alongside Agentic AQUA and your agent gains access to over 10,000 digital products across 180+ countries, including gift cards, mobile top-ups, and eSIMs, with no KYC and no credit card required.

I need an eSIM while I'm here. Look what's available.

For When You Want to Drive It Yourself

Most of this post has been about handing the wheel to your agent. But Agentic AQUA also ships with a CLI, a way to run the same wallet operations yourself by typing short commands. The commands read like sentences (aqua balance, aqua btc address, aqua lightning send), so you don't need to be a developer to use it.

A few reasons you might:

  • Certainty. When you type a command, there's no interpretation. It does exactly what you asked, with exactly the values you gave. For higher-stakes actions, that determinism is a feature.
  • Privacy. Conversations with AI agents are logged. The CLI runs entirely on your machine, so wallet operations don't end up in a chat history.
  • Automation. "Generate a fresh receive address every Monday and email it to my accountant" is a short script with the CLI. Agents are great for open-ended tasks; the CLI is great for repeatable ones.

One thing worth knowing: if you import a wallet via the CLI, don't paste your seed phrase directly into the terminal, since shells keep a history of what you type. The CLI can read your seed from a locked-down file or pipe it in from a password manager instead. The README walks through the setup.

You don't have to pick between the two. The CLI and the agent operate on the same wallets and the same balances. Use your agent for conversational, exploratory work, and drop into the CLI when you want a precise action or you're stitching wallet operations into something larger.

What's Coming

Agentic AQUA does not yet support swaps between Bitcoin and Liquid, but that feature is coming soon. This will supercharge agents to perform the same swaps available in AQUA, enabling things like automated DCA. Tell your agent to buy $10 of BTC every morning and it will set up a cron job to do just that.

If the demand is there, we'll expand Agentic AQUA to maintain full feature parity with the AQUA mobile wallet, keeping pace with integrations like MoneyBadger, ChapSmart, and the providers that let users buy Bitcoin directly in the app.

The infrastructure for agentic commerce is just coming together. Give your agent a wallet and see where it takes you.
